Solo Restaurant

Solo Restaurant in Cape Town, South Africa

One thing that we were missing while in Cape Town was American Soul Food. One of Max’s favourite dishes is Chicken and Waffles. It’s actually an addiction for him and if there is ever Chicken and Waffles on a menu- he will order it. This menu item was what drew us to Solo Restaurant and it became a brunch destination.

Solo Restaurant in located in the heart of the city centre of Cape Town. This is a great area for food, beverage, shopping, and art. If you venture to Solo Restaurant, you will find a lot to do in the vicinity. It is a hip region of the city and this venue matches that aesthetic. The courtyard is beautiful and romantic filled with natural light and greenery.

Menu Items at Solo Restaurant

Truthfully, breakfast is my favourite meal to go out for. Make it a late breakfast and add in more savoury foods (and sometimes mimosas)- it is ideal for me! Luckily Solo Restaurant delivered on both the Chicken and Waffles AND brunch foods. Though the Chicken and Waffles were not what, as Americans, we know as the typical dish, they were still delicious. The batter on the chicken was spicy and crunchy which paired well with the savoury and fluffy waffles. One thing that Solo Restaurant and South Africa in general is missing is maple syrup. Maple trees are not located in the area so this is a huge deficit when it comes to breakfast. They attempted to make another sauce to cover the waffles in but it was aggressively spicy and Max was happy he did not pour it all over his dish.

My breakfast skillet was amazing. The bacon (rasher) was thick cut and contained, what seemed like only fat and had the perfect flavour that ignites your appetite in the morning. The eggs were vibrant in colour and tasted beyond fresh. This chicken was for sure happy. They were fluffy and more than likely had dairy in them to create that texture. The croissant was the crowning jewel of my breakfast though. I’m still unsure how something with so much butter was able to remain standing. For someone who limits gluten and dairy, this was a TREAT. It is clear that they are freshly baked with love daily.

The coffee we got, an Americano and a Cappuccino, were delectable as well.
